Ninth Post

I bring to your attention another great idea and blog written by the creator of FischBowl blog. This blog offers so many different ideas for every month of the year. The blog I choose was for February and was titledA Formula for Success?.It caught my eye because I wonder what could be his idea for a formula for success. Well as I read the blog I began to understand. He took it from the stand point of mathematics, but I am sure it could be used for almost any subject.

The blog simply states that in schools today and schools back when, are learning and were learning subjects out of context, particularly math. He states that we teach students math in the form or formulas and memorization but we don't relate the math problems and formulas to everyday life. With that being said are the students honestly learning the subject at hand or just putting it to memory for the next test? There stands the question.

The idea that our students are learning a subject but not keeping it for the long run is a scary thought. He states that although assessment is needed for students and that we should not water down math or make it easier we just need to make it more practical to our everyday lifestyles. I am a twenty year old college student who hates math and always has but reading this blog put allot of things in to perspective for me.

The idea that a subject might actually be taught in such a way that it could be used in everyday life would be a amazing. This concept and idea that fischbowl brought up is a great one. How many times have we students said " when am I every going to use this?". It's somewhat true. There are many math problems that I could not do now and I took many years of math. It's all in how to teach a subject on whether or not a student will remember. We need to remember students are the future we need to teach so they learn.
