My EDM 310 Blog Assignments are Now Complete

If I could say anything to future students in this class, it would have to be make sure you do your blogs and don't get behind on them. I mean I know its going to seem like such a pain sometimes doing them every week, but honestly they don't take that long and you may actually learn something. And also you lose points for being late, so just do them. Second off make sure you are in class, it really does help you excel in the class. You miss a class and you could miss major information that could help towards the midterm or the final that you have to make 100% on to pass the class. With that being said, overall this class is a great class. I honestly did learn a lot from it and see why future teachers need to take this course. So just roll with the course and get through it and try to enjoy it as best you can!

Last Post!

This computer class truly has taught me so much. Walking into this class I figured I already knew just about everything one needed to know about computers and what they can do to help. However, this class really showed that you have to always continue to learn and open up your mind to new ideas. In this class I learned things that I thought I would never learn or needed to learn. However, this class showed many different programs that can be used in the classroom to bring technology to the future students.
One thing that I learned in this class was how to create a podcast. The idea behind it is a great one and I learned it can be a great tool to help in the classroom. Whether the teacher creates her own podcast for her students or the students listen to podcast already made. The podcast we listen to were really interesting and could teach future teachers a lot. We also had to read blogs, and create out own blogs. The idea that you could possibly reach students from around the world and visa versa is just amazing to me. I had never even blogged before a day in my life until this class and I really see its importance.
Moving on from the Internet, this class really taught me how to use programs that one uses just about everyday ten times better. I now know how to use excel and use it the right way with the functions and the graphs and everything. Which is something I never thought would happen. I also learned how to better utilize word and power-point as well. All these tools and programs and ideas are going to be great for any future teacher and maybe even a future physical education teacher, like myself.
To say that everything was taught in this class that could be taught would not be telling the truth but to be honest I honestly cant think of anything I would have liked to have learned either better or just in general. The class is truly a great stepping stone to becoming a great teacher.

Podcast in the Classroom

The use of video podcast in the classroom I feel is a wonderful idea. On the podcast features titled WGBH there are many different educational video podcast ranging from grades K-12th. The video podcast that i choose to watch was in the K-5 group called " A Night in the Coral Reef". It was about a 3 min video and it was very visually pleasing as well and very educational. I think it fit the age group it was placed in and was just long enough for these children's attention spans. It talked about the different type of creatures that live in the reef and how they survive. It did not over due with information it gave just enough so that the children could understand. It should many different types of fish as well as other creatures. This video would do very well in the classroom.

I think that video podcast should be used in the classroom because for one they are easily accessed. They don't take long to download and not to mention they are not very long. So if the teacher wanted to just give a short intro about the topic these would be a great way to peak the children interest, for any age group. The idea behind them are great and there seems to be a variety to choose from.

The last point I want to make about these video podcast in the classroom is the fact that it ranges from grades K-12th. So that any classroom, whether elementary or high school one of these podcast would be great. If used in the high school setting they could watch one and maybe answer a worksheet on what they watched, that way the teacher knows they watched it. With the younger kids the teacher could asked question in the classroom. Over all the idea is a great one and should be used in ever classroom, and to be honest it could even work in a physical education stand point.

Educational Podcast

The first podcast I watched was The edible Schoolyard. This video was amazing to me. Its such a different way to teach and for kids to learn. The kids in the video seem to be generally happy with the environment around them and the learning that they get to do. They are learning by doing which I think is one of the best ways to learn. The next podcast I watched was A Night in the Global Village, this podcast is just as amazing as the first. It is all about children being taken out of their comfort zone to learn and walk in someone else shoes. Its a great way to teach children about different culture because they will get to experience new things.

Both of these podcast could be used in the classroom in multiple different ways. Its first shows teachers maybe a new and different way to teach on a smaller scale then these schools. Maybe allow their students to have a small garden or allow their student experience life in another country. Teachers could even learn that maybe students need to be more hands on and not so direct focus.

As far as students are concerned when it comes to something like this, it will show them new and different experiences. It will show that other kids are doing things that are interesting yet educational. The idea behind these two schools and the video produce are just amazing and if more schools could incorporate some of these learning styles students would be so much more well rounded. These podcast should be shown to every kid and every teacher. They are great learning tools.

ITunes University

What can Itunes come up with next? Itunes is a great place for portable music and videos and even radio but they also have a educational side to them as well. Itunes has created Itunes University, which is a part of itunes where its full of educational media. Its open to all students and teachers alike. It can be used in the classroom or for homework help.

According to the Apple website , Itunes University is a quick way for mobile learning. They also state that itunes university can be used internally or externally. What this means is you could create a Itunes university website just for your school that is password protected and full of the information one would need. However it can be externally which is open to everyone or a mixture of the two. Either way it creates a great interactive tool for the classroom.

Many university have created itunes university for their students and even though it seems to be a more college based system, high school could probably benefit from it as well. According to the Apple website they listed about ten schools that have their own itunes university and I am sure there are plenty more. Itunes should be used by students if they have a ipod because I believe its a great tool.

Dr. Christie Website.

Teachers are always needing resources on how to maybe bring more technology into the classroom. Well one such teacher created a website dedicated one just for that purpose. Her name is Dr. Alice Christie and she taught for over 40 years. In exploring her website I found many interesting things that could be used in the classroom for any school. She brings technology to the teacher and student.

The first thing that caught my eye was her page on Instant Messaging and what certain slang terms mean. I am not quite sure she advocating using IM in the classroom but she is showing teachers and many parents alike what certain slang terms and abbreviated terms mean. Instant messaging maybe could be a tool in the classroom but only if well monitor and for a classroom discussion to be done in a new and inventive way.

The next page I looked at was her page on navigating the Internet. She shows in this page the different ways and step by steps ways on getting around the Internet. This would be a great source in the classroom for students because it could teach them the proper way to navigate. Many students don't know the proper way and to be honest I'm not to sure I do either. She even gives some references to sites that she uses herself. All and all this page is very useful for inside the classroom.

Although her website had many more things to look at if I keep going this blog will never end. Her site would be so useful to so many teachers. You can tell she really cares about how the teachers teach their students so that students have the best things in the educational system.

Ipod experiences in instruction

The Ipod, most of us know it as a way to listen to our favorite music while walking to class or just sitting at home. However in the past few years Ipods have become the new classroom tool. One school started this trend and now many more schools and researchers are looking into its effectiveness in the classroom. Duke University in 2004 decided to give all their upcoming freshmen free Ipods as way to test a theory so to speak. They programed the Ipods with a academic calender and the schools fight school. The idea behind doing this is so students can have a place for lectures and use it as a research tool. However the question is, is it going to work. The answer simply comes from trying and using the idea.

Another site I found about this topic is actually a research brief on the use of Ipods in the classroom, its called Using Ipods for instruction . The main topic of this article is can it be done, and will it work. They talked about schools that have already intertwined Ipods into the study and they talked about its effectiveness. It was a really informative brief.

In my opinion about the subject i believe that it can be done and it can be effective, if the students are willing to make it work. The idea behind using it in the classroom I think would make it more interesting for the student and they would be more willing to learn more about the subject. Not to mention all the extra resources sitting at their finger tips. Ipods should be used but in a very educational way.
