Eleventh Post

Professor Pausch is a very inspiring speaker and teacher. When he starts out his lecture he speaks about his childhood dreams and how he managed to achieve them. He started with this saying that in teaching we have to allow the student to achieve their goals. He talked about how no matter how many "brick walls" so to speak you come across, if you truly want something they will not stand in your way. He truly believes that anything is possible if its something you truly want.

Also in the lecture he lays down what he will not talk about instead of things he will talk about. He so relaxed in his speaking which makes him all that more personable. He brings in his life lessons and things he achieved and how he made them work no matter what. He is a go- getter kind of guy and I truly believe that he would want students to be that way as well. The fact that he wanted to be a NFL player really shocked me and the way he achieved that goal in such a way amazed me. He is truly a great speaker.

During the lecture he did not say that all his success was just from his doing. He made sure to speak about anyone who helped him along the way. And one such part of the lecture he spoke of a dean he went to in order to get permission to work with Disney and the dean told him no. But yet another dean told him he did not have all the information and that he would need more. He was trying to show that the way to say things to people and really affect a person. He wanted people to understand that words matter.

In the end this man is a great man. And its tragic that someone of his talent died so young. But like he said in the start of his lecture he did not want that to be a factor. "You deal with the cards you are dealt". He truly had a lot to say and teacher should really listen to him and students alike. He really wants people to achieve so much in life and live life to the fullest.

Tenth Post

We had to listen to two podcast from last year's classes. The two podcast that I choose were Watchers and listeners-How do we respond?and Reflections On "The last lecture of Randy Pausch". Podcast are online conversation about different topics that can be argued or just discussed. The podcast the student's from last year's class had to be more on technology then anything else. The first podcast I listened to was Watchers and listeners.

This podcast conceded of three students and the the teacher Dr. Strange. To say that this podcast had problems I can't really say because it did have the professor involved. The team themselves seemed to have there ideas well put together and it did not seemed staged and practiced which is how podcast should be. Just laid back conversation on a topic that interest you. They knew their information very well and spoke about it in a intellectual way. I think that maybe having the teacher involved though hinder them because they may did not talk has freely because the topic at head was the professor article. Over all though the podcast was very well done and not many mistakes that I could see.

The next podcast that I listen to was Reflections On "The last lecture of Randy Pausch". The reason I choose this particular podcast was because it seemed interesting and I wanted to see the difference between having the teacher involved and not involved. They had a conversation which I thought was well done. Although I don't know how interested they were into the topic. However I do believe that not having the teacher involved in the podcast did help them out. They were allowed a little more freedom to express maybe ideas and opinions.

Over all the two podcast were very well done. I think the podcast that I do needs to be very conversational so that it relates to many people. It needs to be relative information and it needs to be interesting. The people also need to try and enjoy their podcast while they are doing it, in hopes that people might get more interested in listening to it.

Ninth Post

I bring to your attention another great idea and blog written by the creator of FischBowl blog. This blog offers so many different ideas for every month of the year. The blog I choose was for February and was titledA Formula for Success?.It caught my eye because I wonder what could be his idea for a formula for success. Well as I read the blog I began to understand. He took it from the stand point of mathematics, but I am sure it could be used for almost any subject.

The blog simply states that in schools today and schools back when, are learning and were learning subjects out of context, particularly math. He states that we teach students math in the form or formulas and memorization but we don't relate the math problems and formulas to everyday life. With that being said are the students honestly learning the subject at hand or just putting it to memory for the next test? There stands the question.

The idea that our students are learning a subject but not keeping it for the long run is a scary thought. He states that although assessment is needed for students and that we should not water down math or make it easier we just need to make it more practical to our everyday lifestyles. I am a twenty year old college student who hates math and always has but reading this blog put allot of things in to perspective for me.

The idea that a subject might actually be taught in such a way that it could be used in everyday life would be a amazing. This concept and idea that fischbowl brought up is a great one. How many times have we students said " when am I every going to use this?". It's somewhat true. There are many math problems that I could not do now and I took many years of math. It's all in how to teach a subject on whether or not a student will remember. We need to remember students are the future we need to teach so they learn.

Eighth Post

Podcast are a innovated way to get information out to people around the world. They allow anyone who knows how to make a podcast, to develop one and publish it. The six podcast that I listen to were about education and and technology. They seemed like they would be great helping tools for teachers or students.

One of the first things I noticed about the podcast was the fact that some of them were very conversational. In the sense of they act as if they are just talking to one another as just another day. It makes the podcast much more interesting and I think it allows people to gain more information from it. With that thought it leads me to my next observations.

The educational podcast were really lively and really gave new ways for teachers to connect with other teachers and maybe even new ideas for the classroom. The Smart-Board podcast really shows this because its an actually tool that can be used in the classroom or at home. It allows teachers around the world to connect with one another.

The idea behind these podcast are really a tech savvy way for teachers to go down to their students level and learn something new. These podcast are really focused on education and technology. They stay pretty personal which brings people in, it also gives new ideas. These podcast would allow for the student to maybe voice their individual opinion. Podcast are a new future tool that I think will be in the classroom.

Seventh Post

The Fischbowl blog once again brings up a very good thought about are teachers and students today. Is it okay to be technologically illiterate? After reading Karl Fisch thoughts and the thoughts of Terry Freedman he brought in I would have to agree with them. Its not alright for teachers not to know anything about technology today. Its the future of our country and our students.

The first part of the blog comes from a source written by Terry Freedman , who list standards that should be set for teachers/workers that if not followed could lead to lost of job. Now mind you some of them are a little extreme but the thought behind it is great. The idea that in today's society its socially acceptable to be proud that you can work a computer. It should not be something you are proud of but something you are going to want to fix.

The next part of the blog goes on to say that the teachers need to learn right along with their students, which I think is a great idea. Karl Fisch makes this statement and believes if teachers don't learn as their students do they can not move forward. Like Mr. Fisch said in the coming future the ability to find a job and no knowing computers is going to get harder. A lot of jobs now a days are run by computers or on computers. If the teacher teaching our students don't know computers then what hope do our students have.

This blog is very informative and one of the best questions that needs to be asked today. The idea that our students could be lost when it comes to our future because it will be completely technologically based is scary. These questions and problems need to be fixed now not later. We need to make it where people are not proud they can't use a computer but ashamed they aren't learning now.
